we are rusto/krylon etc main purchasing/racking demographic and instead of [even if secretly] catering to graffiti/mural artists they continually make our lives miserable, by
fuckng up valves/discontinuing colors/changing formulas etc etc etc ... they can very easily make high quality / cheap paint that im sure most of us would gladly buy ..wtf!?!?!?
what a bad business plan..thats like dunkin donuts discontinuing coffee ..who is making the decisions at these companies?? do they really think by making these awful decisions they will discourage graffiti?? they still havent learned graffiti writers are the most ingenious mfers

it doesnt matter if its effective, if they openly support graffiti then they lose the respect of the american people. once that happens, stores stop carrying them...
they could really care less who/how many people like their paint just as long as its enough for stores to stock their products.
A lot of the formula changes are due to state regulations involving VOC's in the product. Each year or 5 years (can't remember which) states like California, Michigan, New York and Massachusetts commonly reduce the VOC limit which basically forces paint companies to change their formula, usually resulting in less pigment and more solvent.
In my area Home Depot isn't carrying the PT 2X line because of these regulations, which leaves us with Krylon 360, yet an hour drive north will get me the whole line at Home Depots in the next state up.
Whats interesting is that some art stores like Dick Blick and other smaller chains have picked up the Montana Gold line realizing the benefits to artists and crafters. Who knows if Krylon and Rusto will see the light eventually?
i think rusto and krylon will just look at the sales record of Gold at american stores and realize it isnt worth it. because i know they have had Gold on sale in their catalog or ages because they cant move it.

probably not. i would bet european standards are higher than american ones, actually.
In fact what i think you're probably looking at is an often overlooked factor called "shelf price" which with more popular stores is essentially a fee paid by the producer to stock their products on shelves. it's most commonly seen in grocery stores but i wouldn't be surprised if that was what was involved; i bet german MTN (duplicolor) hedged a fair amount of money to pay some american chain stores to stock their product.
That's why you aren't seeing ironlak or spanish mtn in stores other than graff stores is because duplicolor is marketing and promoting german MTN aggressively and commercially, like a real business would. They're trying to go as mainstream as possible, which is not necessarily a bad thing, although I would bet it's bad for graff cause... oh boy... here come the youtube toys again.
Will rusto and krylon change? if people are obsessed enough with german MTN than they might change it. From a purely consumer standpoint the comfort tip pt and fan tip krylon are comfortable and easy to use. Unlike us, the normal customer primes a surface before painting usually... and thin paint looks good on a white primed surface just like thick paint. To a consumer things like a harsh smell and overspray are the #1 issues with paint.
Why I think krylon and rusto won't change is because of plutonium g spray paint and that story. I'm sure you know or have heard of it and that it... really isn't that different from regular paint. It has a nice valve and smells like ice cream; that is, it smells REALLY good and covers OK. other than that though, the brand is faltering, or seems to be. I would be that is because it hasn't been effectively marketed...
that's what is known as marketing. notice the way that they tried to domesticate spraypaint as much as possible. it's always been associated with graff, and i doubt much will change that. german mtn is approaching it from the artistic side of things, as an art supply, which is why you'll never see it in lowes or home depot. bet.
you may see it in michaels someday though. we'll see how far they make it, and whether german MTN stays around.

duplicolor is a larger german corporation and i believe that paint is made by the same.

the way i see it , the market is wiiiiiiiiide open in the u.s. for a cheap , good color, good coverage spray paint to take over ..its ashame a group of writers with good credit [lol]

Injury, its Motip-Dupli that makes the German stuff. Two guys had the idea, paid for Motip-Dupli to produce it(and rip off spanish MTN), then distributed it on their own (L & G Distribution). I've since heard that the paint company bought the company out from the two partners - for a decent sum as well, after they saw the success of the product.
The reason its in so many art stores is they sold to a distributor here who has his foot in the door with a lot of those art chains. Dupli-color here is a Sherwin Williams product.
Very good points though. Plutonium G will never make it here because it is a domestic paint being sold for more than the much better imported products. I think they are going more for the art market and consumer segment, but they seem to have overspent for the packaging they're using. It was like they had a good idea, but went in the wrong direction with it. It just costs too much and isn't readily available enough.
It costs a lot to start, the minimums are high, and most companies only want to sell you their lowest cost product and aren't willing to work on a better formula. The market is wide open for a company like Ironlak to step in - which it is doing.

ironlak...so far not a very friendly company imo ... and i used that paint in 30-40 degree
weather and it was spitting like crazy ..not impressed with that at all ..i used watery ass krylon in the 20's and had less problems [but that was the 90s of course lol] ..
but in the grand scheme of things ironlak is the move..price/quality wise ..

I dont get why people keep saying rusto is changing for the worse. All I use is usually rusto, the PT has nice colors and you can get female caps now from trout and even the stock tip is something akin to a decent fat cap.
I havnt tried Ironlak yet, but from what I read and hear from people its a pretty solid paint for a good price. I plan on trying it when i get my money right. I doubt I'll ever rock the mtn or montana, 5+ a can is too expensive for me to order when i can just go grab some PT, AA or rusto. Same for Belton.
I figure if I use ironlak for anything it will be a few colors supplementing my rusto, so I can get some nice colors. Though from what I read and hear, ironlak actually tries to listen to the consumers about anything they need to work on which is a great thing for us.

i used to live in ohio, and out there there was rusto, aa, old pt, even old krylon if you knew where to go, for days. the selection was crispy. i knew heads out there who would even then paint with fancy stuff just cause they could get it, which didnt make a lot of sense to me.
then one time i finally gave in and got a few cans of PG (played myself...womp) and used it for a memorial wall and some other pieces.
it came out fine but i probably won't do it again, just cause, in a way, i like having limitations. i'm also colorblind, so i feel bad buying rainbow paint when i can't see half the colors anyways . in a way, american paint picks the colors for me. har har.
then again, i know dudes that won't paint unless they have lak or belton or MTN or what have you. this shit is all kinds of flavors now, it's up to you in the end.

yea i can dig it, i only know of one store in the city i live that carries montana, and its 9 bones a can so ill never buy it. rusto/pt and aa have all the colors and work with all the tips i need. if i can still catch up on some ultra flat krylon ill use it, im down to my last can of ultra flat black and im hesitant to use it.....
What are peoples thoughts on Valspar? Its fairly watery, but the colors are nice. If you can depressurize it a bit it works fairly well. I've only used it on primed walls though, hows it on the steel?
Some Valspars or good. Most are not so good. You never get as much coverage even if you have a good solid Valspar color.

basically in my experiences any paint ive found to be a little "watery" and "okay" on primed walls wont be worth its weight in scrap metal on a freight with a not so perfect paint job. you could probly get away with it on those whitesides but not much else.
